The prison, according to the French philosopher Foucault, was born with the objective of “monitoring and punishing”, the title of one of his works published in 1975. The document studies the social instruments of punishment since the 16th century. Would we have imagined that in the 21st century there are restaurants open to the public in prisons? Now, with the aim of working for the reintegration of prisoners into society, allowing contact with the outside world despite their condition of deprivation of liberty, and offering them an income for their sustenance. The prison model that we knew could today be called a successful social enterprise.

El Interno is the restaurant at the San Diego women's prison in Cartagena, Colombia, which opened in 2016 with financial support from the Inter-American Development Bank, IDB.
Idlanathi is the restaurant located on the grounds of the Pollsmoor high security prison in Cape Town, South Africa, the same prison where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
In most cases, you must reserve in advance, it is not allowed to enter with cell phones or cash, and each person's entry is carefully recorded (only for adults). Tipping or taking photos is not allowed.
Beyond the forecasts, it is an experience for the diner and it is an opportunity for the prisoner to become humanized in a prison system that has shown that it is not committed to the reintegration of the person into society once the sentence has been served but rather to the heritage of social stigma.
